Getting an Apostille for Your Marriage Certificate in Copenhagen

If you're getting married in Copenhagen and plan to use your marriage certificate abroad, you may need an apostille to validate the document for international use. An apostille is a certification that ensures your document is recognised in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

Why Do You Need an Apostille?

Many countries require an apostille for legal documents like marriage certificates to confirm their authenticity. Without it, your certificate may not be accepted for official purposes, such as updating your marital status, applying for visas, or registering your marriage abroad. To check if your country requires an apostille on a Danish marriage certificate, follow these steps:

  1. Check if your country is part of the Hague Apostille Convention

    • If your country is a member, then an apostille is usually required to authenticate the document.

    • If not, your country may require legalization through the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then its own embassy.

  2. Contact Your Country’s Embassy or Consulate

    • They can confirm whether an apostille is needed or if additional legalization is required.

  3. Visit Your Country’s Government Website

    • Many countries have official websites listing document legalization requirements for foreign certificates.
